I am here to share a topic I have been flirting with for a while: how to make a rented apartment smart without needing changes to its structure. Although I have read a lot about this subject, in the past, it was more difficult to implement these solutions. However, nowadays, the situation has changed and become more accessible.

It is important to emphasize that making physical modifications to a rented property usually requires permission from the owner, and since I would need to take the solutions wherever I stayed, it is better to opt for solutions without the need for changes to the physical structure.

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system that allows the connection of physical objects to the Internet, enabling them to be monitored, controlled, and collect real-time data. These devices can be as simple as a smart light bulb or as complex as a commercial airplane.

Benefits of IoT in apartments and condominiums

The potential of IoT to improve efficiency is becoming increasingly evident regarding commercial buildings, apartments, and condominiums. IoT can offer numerous benefits, such as improving energy efficiency, security, convenience, and the quality of life for residents. Some examples of applications include:

  • Smart lighting systems: Light bulbs and switches that can be controlled remotely or adjusted automatically based on pre-established schedules or presence sensors.
  • Climate control systems: Smart air conditioning systems that can be controlled remotely and programmed to adjust the temperature automatically, increasing their performance and thus reducing their energy consumption.
  • Energy monitoring system: Energy meters can be installed directly on electronic devices or energy panels. This monitoring enables the identification of consumption patterns, waste, and savings opportunities, assisting in the management and control of energy expenses.
  • Water/gas leak systems: Sensors can be installed in places like sinks, kitchens, and gas-heated bathrooms. This type of monitoring allows for the predictive identification of leaks that may endanger people's health and the structure of the location.

In the midst of this constantly evolving landscape, IoT systems emerge as a great ally for companies seeking to increase their efficiency and reduce costs.

With real-time data collection and analysis, it is possible to detect problems in advance and act preventively, avoiding costly failures.

For condominiums, Squair, a member of the technology company Hurb, offers monitoring and consumption control solutions, providing smarter and more efficient management.

In summary, IoT systems are an increasingly essential technology for companies and condominiums looking to stand out in an ever more competitive market.
